He had spent twenty minutes outside of the tapestry that hid the entrance to the Head common room and dormitories, staring at the fruit. It was getting ridiculous. He was being completely ridiculous. The whole thing was ridiculous. It was only Evans, after all. Evans with her tomato hair and frog eyes, Evans with her lofty voice and holier-than-thou manners, Evans who smelled like feet. Evans, who snorted pumpkin juice out of her nostrils that one time. Evans who always jumped three feet into the air at the opportunity to kiss professors’ asses. Evans whose only friends were books and her mum. But even then, he knew that none of it was really true (except for the pumpkin juice and the lofty voice and the kissing professors’ asses bits, but otherwise, not really). He was just hiding how much he really liked her. After all, they were only eleven, and it was the only way he could think of to show his affection and the only excuse he had to talk to her without seeming like a stupid sap. He’d felt awful every time her face turned red, and everyone could tell that she was trying desperately not to cry, but Sirius was already laughing at the things he just said, so there was no way he could have taken it back. He remembered watching her invite that weird Lupin kid and that annoying Pettigrew kid to sit with her in Transfiguration class and walking up to them afterwards and inviting them to sit with Sirius and him at lunch just to prove that he could be just as nice as Evans. He remembered feeling incredibly jealous at how easily Remus could talk to her without having to resort to making fun of her, and he remembered laughing at Remus for being friends with a girl just to make himself feel better.
